The decision by Nigeria’s Accountant-General’s Office to allegedly hold a workshop in London has sparked outrage, with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, leading the charge against it.
He described the move as not only unacceptable but deeply troubling, emphasizing that it shows a blatant disregard for fiscal responsibility and prudent expenditure of public funds.
In a series of posts on social media, Obi called on Nigerians to vehemently denounce and condemn the decision, noting that the resources allocated for such purposes should be directed towards addressing pressing domestic needs, including healthcare, education, infrastructure, and poverty alleviation.
He criticized the government for indulging in luxury and extravagance at the expense of the common citizen, stating that holding a workshop in London sends the wrong message and perpetuates the perception of elitism and detachment from the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.
Obi also raised concerns about transparency and accountability in government procurement processes, demanding full disclosure and justification for why London was chosen as the venue and how vendors and contractors were selected. He emphasized the need for thorough investigation and addressing of any hint of impropriety or favoritism in awarding contracts for such events.
Meanwhile, Obi stated that in the new Nigeria they seek, such frivolity would be unthinkable, envisioning a nation where taxpayer money is judiciously utilized for the benefit of all citizens.
